São Paulo Defeats Corinthians 2-1 in a Special Week

São Paulo defeated Corinthians 2-1 on Saturday at Morumbi in the 25th round of the Brazilian Championship. The victory capped off a special week for São Paulo fans, who were still celebrating their Copa do Brasil title from last Sunday when they also beat Coritiba at Morumbi.

Jonathan Calleri scored both goals for São Paulo in the tricolor triumph. São Paulo is now in tenth place with 34 points, nine more than Bahia, who is currently in the relegation zone in the Brasileirão. Timão, on the other hand, has 30 points.

Because of a crucial South American Championship game against Fortaleza on Tuesday, Corinthians surprised São Paulo early in the encounter.

They took advantage of a mistake by São Paulo, and Romero scored the opening goal with a left-footed shot just two minutes into the game. It was Romero’s first goal since his return to the club.

Corinthians retreated and allowed Dorival Júnior’s team to gain momentum. In the 40th minute, Rodrigo Nestor, who was a hero in winning the Copa do Brasil, volleyed a rebound from a corner.

Calleri deflected the ball in the small area, equalizing the game. Five minutes later, Calleri, number 9, turned the game around.

He received a low cross after a beautiful build-up involving Rafinha, Calleri, and Alisson, putting São Paulo ahead at Majestoso. It marked Jonathan Calleri’s fifth classic goal against Corinthians, and it was his first in 2023.

He scored five goals against Timão, four of them at Morumbi. São Paulo won each time he scored at Morumbi. His first goal against Corinthians was in the 2021 Brazilian Championship, resulting in a 1-0 victory for Tricolor at Morumbi.

The next year, he scored again in a 1-0 win for São Paulo in the Campeonato Paulista, when Portuguese Vítor Pereira debuted as Corinthians’ coach. In the same year, during the Brasileirão, he scored in a 1-1 draw at the Neo Química Arena.

This Saturday, he scored his fifth goal against Corinthians. São Paulo has a week to train before their Brazilian Championship match against Vasco next Saturday at São Januário. Corinthians play Fortaleza in the Sudamericana and then face Flamengo in the Brasileirão at the Neo Química Arena next Saturday.
