Who Will Challenge Ochoa’s Reign as Mexico’s No. 1 Goalkeeper?

Guillermo Ochoa has sat out 42 games, encompassing both friendly and official matches, during the past five years with the Mexican National Team.

Nine different goalkeepers have taken his place in the Tricolor starting eleven, with names such as Alfredo Talavera, Jesús Corona, Gibrán Lajud, Raúl Gudiño, and Luis Ángel Malagón appearing on the list. Luis Ángel Malagón is the latest goalkeeper to step in for the five-time World Cup participant.

Guillermo Ochoa has not participated in 42 games over the past five years, either as a substitute or due to not being called up. In these matches, particularly in preparation games, the Mexican National Team boasts a record of 26 wins, nine draws, and seven losses.

During these five years, Alfredo Talavera has been the most frequent starter in games where Guillermo Ochoa was absent. Following the current Juárez goalkeeper are Carlos Acevedo and Rodolfo Cota, both with six appearances each.

Hugo González has started five matches in the next step. Guillermo Ochoa was absent four times when Jonathan Orozco served as Mexico’s national team goalpost. Raúl Gudiño and Jesús Corona each have three appearances.

Luis Ángel Malagón, who became the second goalkeeper of the Mexican National Team by replacing Ochoa in Honduras, is on the list with only two matches as a starter.

Gibrán Lajud played only one game with the Mexican National Team, and it happened in 2018 during a friendly against Costa Rica. He started as part of the Cruz Azul youth squad but played only in the first half.

This afternoon marks the 43rd match without Guillermo Ochoa in the goal of the Mexican National Team over the last five years. Injury will prevent him from playing in the second leg of the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals against Honduras.
