Shreyas Iyer Injury Throws Selection Wrench in India’s Plans for Third Test Against England

Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer’s reported stiff back and groin pain have thrown a curveball at the selection committee’s plans for the crucial third Test against England in Rajkot, starting February 15th.

Iyer’s struggles with the bat in the series thus far (35, 13, 27, 29) added another layer of complexity to the decision, sparking the question: retain or replace?

Iyer’s Recent Form and Injury Concerns:

While Iyer has undeniable talent, his recent form has been a cause for concern. He hasn’t scored a fifty in his last 13 innings, averaging a meagre 17. Worse yet, he hasn’t reached a Test century since his debut in November 2021, going 23 innings without reaching the three-figure mark.

Now, his reported Shreyas Iyer Injury adds another dimension to the conundrum. If he’s ruled out, the selectors face a tough choice: who will replace him in the Indian XI?

KL Rahul will be a switch for the upcoming match

Rahul is expected to take back the No. 4 place, while Virat Kohli is expected to miss the remaining three games against England as well. Virat had earlier withdrawn from the first two games due to personal issues.

Following the first game in Hyderabad, he complained of quadriceps soreness, which kept him from playing in the second Test.

Rahul, however, will be a great choice for the team management to take over the role and provide some experience to the lineup because he has had enough time to heal since then. In the Hyderabad game, he had scored a fluid 86 in the first innings.

Pujara’s Ranji Form Ignites Debate: Stop-Gap Solution or Youth Focus?

While Cheteshwar Pujara’s Ranji Trophy heroics spark comeback chatter, it’s unlikely India will deviate from their youth focus in the ongoing Test Championship cycle. However, with Shreyas Iyer’s recent back injury casting a shadow, Pujara could emerge as a reliable stop-gap solution.

Pujara’s 62nd first-class hundred strengthens his case, but last year’s reliance on Ajinkya Rahane after Iyer’s injury suggests India might prioritize younger options. Ultimately, the decision hinges on balancing experience with long-term vision.

Sarfaraz Khan: A Viable Option with Shreyas Iyer Injured?

With Shreyas Iyer’s recurring back issues raising concerns about his availability for upcoming Test matches, the Indian team management might need to look for alternatives.

While KL Rahul’s return remains uncertain and Cheteshwar Pujara‘s inclusion seems unlikely, Sarfaraz Khan emerges as a potential candidate.

Khan added to the squad after Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja’s initial exclusion, hasn’t had a chance to showcase his talent at the international level. However, his impressive domestic record speaks volumes.

His recent knock of 161 runs in 160 balls, coupled with his overall first-class average of 69.85 and 14 centuries in 45 matches, demonstrate his exceptional batting prowess.

With Iyer’s fitness woes potentially creating a void in the middle order, Khan’s aggressive style and penchant for big scores could prove valuable. His inclusion would also inject youthful energy into the lineup.

While the final decision rests with the management, Khan’s talent and domestic form cannot be ignored. If presented with the opportunity, he could prove to be a worthy replacement for the injured Iyer and make a strong case for his future in the Test squad.
