India Announces 15-Man Squad for 2023 ODI World Cup

On Saturday night, the BCCI senior national selection committee announced the 15-man roster for the 2023 ICC One-Day International World Cup. KL Rahul got a place in the team, however, Sanju Samson did not.

Ajit Agarkar, the head of the selection committee, traveled to Sri Lanka to meet with Indian captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid. They chose the squad following the India vs. Pakistan Asia Cup game in Kandy, which was called off after the first innings due to rain.

India Finalizes World Cup Squad: Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja Return

The World Cup team did not include Samson, Tilak Varma, and Prasidh Krishna, who are presently in Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup. Rohit Sharma will captain the side, and Ishan Kishan, who has excelled in the middle order, has earned a position in the squad.

Apart from Captain Sharma, the prominent players in India’s batting lineup for the multi-nation event will include Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav.

Because they placed a premium on having a depth of batting, the selection committee and team management selected allrounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Shardul Thakur in the roster.

India’s Strong Bowling Attack for Asia Cup

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj will front the pace assault in the bowling department, and spinner Kuldeep Yadav also made the team.

Rahul had a clean bill of health, and the selection committee discussed his fitness. He was a part of the group. Rahul spent many hours batting at Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy while working on his technique in the nets. Additionally, it has come to light that he will travel to Sri Lanka to represent India in the Asia Cup.

Rahul Fit to Join India’s World Cup Squad

To the International Cricket Council (ICC), the BCCI has until September 5 to submit its final World Cup roster. On the evening of September 4, they planned to meet with the selection committee. Rahul’s medical staff believed there was no need to wait another day after they gave the all-clear. Therefore, they decided against it.

Rahul underwent surgery on his right thigh and has been out for the past three and a half months. Rahul frequently plays in the starting XI and will likely serve as the goalie at the World Cup.

Agarkar said at a press conference a few weeks ago that Rahul had sustained a slight injury, which is why Sanju Samson was selected as a backup.

There were no major shocks in store because Agarkar had already said that the selection committee will choose the World Cup team from its 18-member Asia Cup roster.
