New Zealand’s Tim Southee in doubt for World Cup after thumb surgery
The World Cup kicks off on October 5 in India. The New Zealand team experienced a huge setback before the event, with Kane Williamson’s team potentially losing a crucial member Tim Southee.
This player, who was part of the team that lost in the World Cup final the last time, may miss the World Cup owing to surgery on his right thumb. As a result, it looks like he will take a break from the cricket pitch.
Next week, they will decide whether Team Saudi will take part in the World Cup in India. Saudi incurred a right thumb injury while attempting to catch the ball in the fourth ODI against England last week.
Gary Stead, the head coach of New Zealand, hopes that the 34-year-old bowler will recuperate before the World Cup, which begins on October 5.
Statement of New Zealand Coach Gary Stead
“We decided it would be a good idea to operate on Southee,” Stead said. Pins or screws will be placed in his right thumb, and if the procedure is successful, he could see an early return to the team. He is in a lot of pain now but we have to make sure he can bear it.”
New Zealand will play warm-up matches against Pakistan and South Africa on September 29 and October 2 before the World Cup opener against reigning champions England.
“Our first match of the World Cup is against England on October 5 and we are targeting his return to the squad,” Stead said. If he is not fully fit then we will change the team. Any change after this would have to be approved by the International Cricket Council (ICC). We have looked for an alternate bowler as a precautionary measure.”
