Indian Men’s Badminton Team Secure Medal After 37 Years

Indian men’s badminton team wins bronze at Asian Games, women’s team bows out in quarterfinals

The Indian men’s badminton team secured a medal by defeating Nepal 3-0, ending a 37-year drought in the team event at the Asian Games on Friday. However, the women’s team lost 3-0 to Thailand in the quarterfinals. Pornpawee Chochuwong defeated PV Sindhu with scores of 21-14, 15-21, 14-21.

Ashmita Chaliha suffered a 21-9, 21-16 loss to Busanan Ongbamrungphan. The doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were beaten by Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai with scores 19-21, 5-21.

Indian Men’s Badminton Team Reaches Semifinals for First Time Since 1986

Indian men defeated Nepal to reach the semifinals, marking their first appearance since the 1986 Seoul Games. India rested HS Prannoy, who has minor injuries, and instead, Mithun Manjunath played in singles.

Lakshya Sen, a former bronze medallist at the World Championships, easily beat Prince Dahal 21-5, 21-8 in just 22 minutes.

Kidambi Srikanth defeated Sunil Joshi 21-4, 21-13 in the second singles match. National champion Manjunath secured the victory for India by beating Bishnu Katuwal 21-2, 21-7.

India to face South Korea in badminton semifinals

In 1986, the team, consisting of Prakash Padukone, U Vimal Kumar, Uday Pawar, Leroy D’Sa, Ravi Kunte, Sanat Misra, and Syed Modi, won the team bronze. India lost 1-4 to China in the semifinals, with Padukone winning the first singles against Zhao Jianhua, but India lost the next four matches.

In the semifinals on Saturday, India will face South Korea, who stunned Indonesia 3-1. The Koreans have strong doubles outfits, including reigning World Champions Seo Seungjae and Kang Minhyuk, who defeated the World No.1 pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian.

In the other quarterfinals, Japan defeated Hong Kong 3-1, and China defeated Chinese Taipei 3-1. The women’s semifinals will feature Thailand facing South Korea and China playing Japan.
