Sinner Stuns Fritz to Claim US Open Title

Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz in the US Open 2024, won the title, and made history.

Jannik Sinner completed one of his most successful large campaigns by beating Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-4 7-5 in the final on Sunday afternoon in the US Open.

The 23-year-old makes history and erases home hopes for Fritz’s title ambitions. He affirms why he moved through the ranks to become one of the select Star players within the past 18 months.

Sinner, who has occupied the World No. 1 position, has claimed or will claim, his sixth title of the season or in 2024, a record number for this year’s final and in the battle for the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF title, Sinner leads by 4,105 points followed by Alexander Zverev.

Excitement filled the air as Fritz stepped onto the court of Arthur Ashe Stadium for the final match as the first American men’s singles finalist since 2006.

But Sinner deflated that bubble with steady, unflappable serving and excellent baseline skills. The Italian has become the first man in 47 years to win his first and second grand slam titles in a year. He treated Fritz mercilessly in three sets, making only 21 unforced errors on the court.

This year, Carlos Alcaraz also won the Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Thus, for the first time since 1993, all four major titles have been won by a player under 23.

It’s great to have fresh champions in the sport. Sinner told ESPN, “I feel like the new generation is pushing each other to improve.”

Earlier, at the trophy ceremony, Sinner said, “This victory means so much to me; the final phase of my career was not easy. My team encourages me every day, as do those close to me.”

“I enjoy tennis and work hard to prepare for these kinds of events, but there is life outside of the court. I want to dedicate this title to my aunt, who is not feeling well physically. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll have her in my life. It’s wonderful that I can still enjoy a happy moment with her.”

Sinner Claims US Open Title, Joins Elite Group of Champions

Fritz fought hard for his first Grand Slam championship victory but was overwhelmed for most of a third Lexus ATP Head2Head encounter by Sinner.

The top seed was at his most vulnerable when he was 5-3 up in the third set, using a passionate home crowd to draw first blood and had a chance to serve out. But Sinner won four games in a row to emerge victorious in the end.

Winning in 2 hours and 16 minutes, Sinner joined Mats Wilander, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic in clinching the Australian Open and the US Open on hard courts in the same season.

He is thus the first Italian to win the men’s singles event in the tournament’s history and only the second Italian singles champion, with Flavia Pennetta having been the first, having clinched the women’s singles title in 2015.

The victory in New York has boosted Sinner’s tally for the year to 55-5 while he has successfully defended his title. Having defeated Fritz in Sunday’s meeting, the Italian stepped into his 11th consecutive triumph and the ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati before the US Open.

“So many big wins for me this season, starting off with Australia,” Sinner told the crowd. “Playing so well there boosted my confidence. The labor never stops. As we witnessed today, I know I still have room to improve in a few areas. However, you must be content with what you have and work hard to obtain the rest. I can’t wait to continue my process.”

Fritz was entering the contest with the ability to take out the championship, and this would see him as the first American man since Andy Roddick in the US Open of 2003.

Although Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz, Fritz displayed his personal-best performance in a Grand Slam event, which has helped him to climb five places in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.

Fritz apologized, saying, “I know we have been waiting for a champion for a long time, so I couldn’t get it done this time.” “I’m going to work hard and maybe the next time, I’ll get in.

Fritz’s Challenge Fades as Sinner Shines at US Open

An assertive forehand winner of the first game of the match, before breaking serve, established Sinner in New York. Fritz was only able to retrieve the break at 2-2, the World No. 1 remained firmly in charge of the first set that followed.

Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz, plan of taking Fritz side to side, not allowing him to stand and just hitting the ball from the middle of the court was very much evident in the first game itself.

The said set saw Fritz achieve only 38 percent (11/29) of first serves; thus, the Italian reversed the American’s delivery in the seventh and ninth games and established a lead.

While the second set saw a better rhythmic serving behind him in particular, and his primary weapon, the harsh 11th game took its toll with offering the first break points at 15/40, Sinner carved it out.

The Italian required only one, as he struck a backhand down the line that put pressure on Fritz to come to the net to make the score one set each.

It was a celebrity night at Arrowhead Stadium, and the megaphone of Taylor Swift coupled with her boyfriend Travis Kelce did everything possible to force Fritz to a turnaround.

Other celebrities that were watching the title match included Kelce’s teammate from the Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, actors Matthew McConaughey, Dustin Hoffman, and Eddie Redmayne and musical artists such as Usher and Bon Jovi among others.

However the dream of an American titlist was quickly cut short by Sinner’s destruction of Fritz’s third set.

While Fritz could achieve a forehand on the championship point, Sinner spread out his arms in joy after becoming the first No.1 in the PIF ATP Rankings to clinch a champion triumph in the US Open since Rafael Nadal in 2017.

He has now claimed the winning record of 6-0 in the tour-level finals this year 2024 and is ranked as the fifth player of active players with more than one Grand Slam title wins.
