Jonassen rejoices at her return with a stellar performance

Left out of the first two matches for the Delhi Capitals in the ongoing Women’s Premier League, Jonassen expressed her delight at being back on the field.

However, she didn’t take long to demonstrate her invaluable skills, becoming a near-automatic selection for future games with her all-around brilliance in their 25-run victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Jonassen first propelled the Capitals to a formidable total of 194 for 5 with a blazing knock of 36 runs off just 16 deliveries, including a couple of towering sixes at the death, boasting a staggering strike rate of 225.

Later, when the Challengers, led by Smriti Mandhana’s brilliant 43-ball 74, attempted a record WPL chase in front of their home crowd in Bengaluru, Jonassen showcased her fielding prowess with two crucial catches in the deep, dismissing Sophie Devine and Richa Ghosh.

Entrusted with the responsibility of bowling the crucial death overs, Jonassen rose to the occasion, claiming three wickets in the first four balls of the final over, starting with the scalp of her Australian teammate Sophie Molineux.

Her impressive spell concluded with figures of 3-21 from her four overs, effectively shutting down the Bangalore chase.

The Bangalore innings ended at 169 for 9, with substitute fielder Annabel Sutherland, who replaced the unwell Ellyse Perry, contributing significantly by taking two catches in the deep during Jonassen’s three-wicket over.

Captain Meg Lanning, celebrating her team’s rise to the top of the table with their second win, acknowledged the selection dilemma posed by the abundance of talent at her disposal.

“JJ came in and was outstanding,” Lanning said, commending Jonassen’s performance under pressure. “She showed she can hold her nerve, it was nice to see her do well.”

Despite her match-winning performance, Jonassen was not awarded the player-of-the-match title.

The honor went to South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, who shared a crucial 48-run partnership with Jonassen and picked up the vital wicket of Mandhana with her bowling, finishing with figures of 2-35.

“We have got a great variety of players who can step up and do a job on any given night against any opposition,” Lanning concluded, highlighting the team’s depth and versatility.
