Ohtani’s Historic Run Continues: Los Angeles Dodgers Eliminated the New York Mets to World Series
Los Angeles Dodgers eliminated the New York Mets with a 10-5 win in Game 6 of the NL Championship Series, and Tommy Edman and Will Smith homered to help send Shohei Ohtani to the World Series for the first time.
Los Dodgers clinched their record 25th NL pennant, first at home since 1988, when they beat the Mets in seven games for their fifth World Series title and fourth since 1988. That takes them to their 22nd World Series, 13th in Los Angeles, and first since 2020 when they beat Tampa Bay in the pandemic-shortened season.
Heading next for Ohtani and Co. is Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees, who are back in the World Series for the 41st time and first in 15 years. Friday night the top home run hitters in the majors this year set the stage: Judge (58) vs Ohtani (54) in Game 1 at Dodger Stadium.
It’ll also be the 12th time the storied franchises have squared off in the World Series and the first in 43 years. In eight meetings, the Yankees have the Dodgers’ number, with the Dodgers’ two championships in that series in 1981 and 1955.
Dodgers Dominate Mets, Advance to NLCS
In Game 6, Ohtani had two hits and two runs scored in his first season with the Dodgers after signing to a record deal from free agency. In the NLCS, he hit .364 with two homers and six RBIs.
That’s not too bad. It was his first tiptoe into the playoffs after six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, who never managed a winning season and never made the playoffs under him.
Blake Treinen struck out Brandon Nimmo, Mark Vientos, and Pete Alonso swinging in the eighth in his first two-inning outing since the 2021 NLCS.
Cleanup hitter Edman came up big to get the Dodgers on track before they briefly trailed 1-0.
His 11 RBIs scored in the NLCS matched a franchise record, tied by Corey Seager in a 2020 series versus Atlanta, and he drove in the Dodgers’ first four runs. The Dodgers picked up Edman from St. Louis at the July trade deadline.
On their second try at eliminating the Mets in the series, the Dodgers knocked them out. In the six games, they outscored New York by 40-26. All the games were blowouts with two shutouts for the Dodgers.
After a 22-33 start, the Mets came a hair away from reaching the World Series.
Edman doubled in the first, past Orioles starter Sean Manaea, into the left-field corner to score Ohtani and Teoscar Hernández, who hit singles, and the Dodgers were up 2-1. Hernández snapped an 0-for-18 in the NLCS. Manaea was forced to go 34 pitches to complete the first.
Edman sent a 406-foot shot, to left-center a two-run shot with two strikes in the third. Smith homered into the centerfield bleachers off Phil Maton, 416 feet, a walk to Max Muncy and two outs later, to extend the lead to 6-1.
The Mets cut their deficit to 6-3 in the fourth. Vientos hit a two-run homer (his fifth playoff run) off Ryan Brasier with two out. The Mets tied the series at one apiece in Game 2 at Dodger Stadium with Vientos’ first grand slam.
The bases were loaded in both times that New York failed to cash in. Jesse Winker flew out against Evan Phillips to end the inning, trailing 6-3 in the sixth. The Mets loaded the bases down a run in the third against Anthony Banda but Jeff McNeil struck out swinging.
