MI vs RCB WPL: RCB Won by 5 Runs to Reach WPL 2024 Final
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 witnessed a nail-biting encounter in the Eliminator as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) edged out defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) by a mere 5 runs.
This dramatic win propelled RCB into the much-anticipated final, where they’ll face the formidable Delhi Capitals.
Perry Anchors RCB’s Modest Total
Opting to bat first, RCB found themselves in early trouble, losing wickets at regular intervals. However, the ever-reliable Ellyse Perry stood tall amidst the carnage.
Her gritty knock of 66 runs off 50 balls, laced with eight fours and a six, provided much-needed stability to the RCB innings.
The rest of the batting lineup faltered, managing only 69 runs between them, as RCB ended their innings at a below-par 135/6.
MI Falter at the Death
Chasing a modest target, MI lost the early wicket of Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia. After that, in the 11th over Brunt lost her wicket, and MI lost 3wickets in 68 runs.
However, Harmanpreet turned the match from RCB and MI to lead the race. But her dismissal in the 18th over triggered a collapse.
The experienced duo of Harmanpreet Kaur and Amelia Kerr consolidated the innings, guiding MI towards a seemingly comfortable position with 50-run partnerships.
RCB’s Bowling Heroics Seal the Deal
With 20 runs required off the last three overs and seven wickets in hand, the match seemed destined for a Mumbai win. But RCB bowlers had other plans.
Tight bowling choked the flow of runs, and crucial breakthroughs in the penultimate over, including the big wicket of Harmanpreet Kaur, shifted the momentum dramatically.
The final over became a nerve-wracking affair. Left-arm spinner Asha Sobhana displayed exceptional composure, conceding just a single off the last ball to Amelia Kerr, leaving MI stranded at 130/6 and securing a historic win for RCB.
Turning Point and Player of the Match
The turning point of the match undoubtedly came in the penultimate over bowled by Sophie Molineux. Shreyanka Patil gave the breakthrough in the last ball of 18 overs.
The dismissal of Harmanpreet, who was cruising towards a match-winning knock, swung the momentum decisively in RCB’s favour.
Ellyse Perry’s anchoring knock with the bat and Asha Sobhana’s composure under pressure were crucial in RCB’s victory. Perry’s all-around performance makes her a strong contender for the Player of the Match award.
What to Next?
This thrilling win will send a wave of confidence through the RCB camp as they prepare to face the mighty Delhi Capitals in the final. With both teams boasting exceptional talent, the WPL 2024 final promises to be a high-octane clash that cricket fans worldwide won’t want to miss.
