Cowboys Edge Out Steelers in Thrilling Finish
Dallas Cowboys outnumbered the Steelers, and Dallas continued to shoot itself in the cleat. But it took the Cowboys a comeback to escape Pittsburgh with a win.
Dak Prescott hit Jalen Tolbert in the endzone with 20 seconds left on fourth down and found the rookie in the endzone on a 4-yard touchdown catch that put the Cowboys up 20-17.
Both teams are 3-2.
The game finished with a Monday morning almost 90-minute weather delay, with three lead changes in the fourth quarter and four in the second half.
The Cowboys reached the Pittsburgh 1, where Rico Dowdle fumbled, and Elandon Roberts timed his jump and hit the ball out to Seattle. Roberts’ helmet hit the ball, and Dowdle tried to dive into the end zone. The Cowboys were saved by Prescott beating Miles Killebrew to the loose ball at the 4-yard line.
Prescott’s Redemption: Cowboys’ Quarterback Shines in Clutch Moment
Prescott fumbled, overthrew Tolbert on the third down, and Tolbert injured himself. For Tolbert to stay in the game on fourth down and make the game-winning grab in front of safety DeShon Elliott, the Cowboys called a timeout.
It should never have been a matter of going to the end, but the Cowboys failed to register three out of three in the red zone. They got only three points out of drives that ended at the Pittsburgh 11, 15, 15, and 20. Prescott had three turnovers, equaling a lost fumble in the red zone and an interception in the end zone when the Cowboys were in the red zone.
After Pat Freiermuth caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Justin Fields to give the Steelers the lead with 4:56 left, Prescott got a chance to redeem himself, and he did so.
Cowboys’ Offensive Juggernaut Too Much for Steelers
Prescott was 29 of 42 passing for 352 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He threw a 22-yard score to Dowdle, who had to spin and slide to catch it, with 13:51 left that gave the Cowboys a 13-10 lead until Freiermuth’s touchdown.
Dowdle was a man on the field getting 20 carries for 87 yards, catching the ball twice for 27 yards, and the score. Tolbert caught seven passes for 87 yards and the scriptural touchdown, while Lamb was limited to five for 62 yards.
The Cowboys dominated the Steelers in total yards – 445-226 – and Fields was 15-27 passing for 131 yards and two scores. Pitt topped that with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Bennett to Connor Heyward in the third to take a 10-6 lead.
Najee Harris rushed for 42 yards on 14 occasions and caught the ball for 35 yards.
T.J. Watt brought down Prescott 1.5 times for sack, and he reached 101 career sacks total.
