Sarfaraz Ahmed Retires Hurt After Being Hit on Head by Bouncer

Asitha Fernando delivered a ball that hit Sarfaraz in the helmet, and Sarfaraz batted for a bit before retiring hurt.

The PCB has announced that Mohammad Rizwan would replace him for the rest of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, marking the first time Pakistan has used a concussion substitution in Test cricket.

He received a bouncer from Asitha Fernando that struck him in the back of the head. During the third day’s play’s afternoon session, he had to face the delivery.

He had descended the pitch to play the ball, which was the first of the second fresh ball. Four leg byes were the consequence of the delivery.

Sarfaraz took a concussion test as required and then batted for another five overs with no obvious consequence. He set three limits at that period, but after the third, he summoned Pakistan physiotherapist Cliffe Deacon.

A full delivery from Dilshan Madushanka struck him at the back of his head. A few minutes later, he left the field.

The match officials provided an official assessment of concussion to the match referee David Boon as required by the concussion substitution regulations.

Sarfaraz Ahmed has been replaced by Mohammad Rizwan as a concussion substitute in the ongoing second Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the Singhalese Sports Club after match referee David Boon accepted the Pakistan team management’s request for the substitution,” a PCB statement said.

Rizwan Replaced Sarfaraz after the Injury

“Sarfaraz was hit on his head while ducking a bouncer by Asitha Fernando in the afternoon session on day three. He remains under the observation of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s medical panel.”

Rizwan will now bat in this innings as the wicketkeeper-batter replaces Sarfaraz in a like-for-like swap. Rizwan had been Pakistan’s chosen Test wicketkeeper for a few years before this year, keeping Sarfaraz out of the XI.

Despite poor form with the bat, he came back for the home series against New Zealand earlier this year. He subsequently cemented his position by scoring 86, 53, 78, and 118 over the two Tests.
