
Indian athletes at the 19th Asian Games
Indian athletes are presently competing at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, with a squad size of 655. The occasion started on September 23 and will conclude on October 8. It originally slated the Games for 2022, but for COVID-19, it moved up a year.
India sent a 570-person team to the previous Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018, where they won their best-ever number of medals—70—with 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze. The large contingent this season could increase medals.

Out of the 672 medals awarded in total in the Asian Games, India has won 254 of them in athletics over the years. India will compete in track and field sports at Hangzhou 2023, fielding their largest team of 68 competitors in any discipline.
Leading competitors like Neeraj Chopra, the current world, Olympic, and Asian Games champion in men’s javelin throw, are part of the Indian athletics team competing in Hangzhou. The squad also includes Avinash Sable, who took silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase in the Commonwealth Games. Jyothi Yarraji, a phenomenon in women’s hurdles, is another.
Indian Cricket Teams Make Asian Games Debut
Both men’s and women’s cricket teams from India will compete at the Asian Games for the first time. It will fully represent India in both hockey and football.
World champion Nikhat Zareen and Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain lead the boxing squad, making them strong medal candidates. Additionally, the wrestling squad, featuring Bajrang Punia and Antim Panghal, is also a strong contender for medals.
In the shooting team, Manu Bhaker and Rudrankksh Patil are anticipated to excel.
Indian Olympians to participate in Hangzhou
Olympic medal-winning weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and badminton superstar PV Sindhu will also participate in Hangzhou. Aditi Gopichand Swami and Ojas Pravin Deotale, two reigning world champions in archery, will also be present.
Six in archery, ten in artistic swimming, 34 in boxing, two in breaking, two in hockey, ten in the modern pentathlon, six in sailing, two in tennis, and two in water polo are among the 74 Olympic quotas that Hangzhou is offering for the Paris 2024 Games.
India has so far taken home two silver medals at the 2023 Asian Games.
