Lee Zii Jia vs Loh Kean Yew, Lee into All England Quarters
Malaysian badminton ace Lee Zii Jia displayed a masterclass performance today at the All England Championships, dismantling Singapore’s 2021 World Champion Loh Kean Yew in straight sets (21-15, 21-12) during their high-octane second-round clash.
Clinical Performance Earns Dominant Victory
The world number 10 Lee dominated the match at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena, showcasing flawless badminton to secure victory in a swift 33 minutes.
This win marks Lee’s fourth consecutive victory over his 11th-ranked opponent, extending his lead in their head-to-head record (4-2).
Eyes on the Quarterfinals
Lee, the reigning 2021 All England champion, now sets his sights on the quarterfinals. He’ll face either India’s Lakshya Sen or world number four Anders Antonsen from Denmark.
Notably, this isn’t Lee’s first time excelling at the All England. He has consistently reached the semi-finals in the past four editions, even securing the coveted title in 2021.
Lee Takes Early Control, Never Looks Back
Lee established a commanding lead early on, leaving Loh with little room to manoeuvre. In the first set, he surged ahead with an impressive 8-0 lead.
Despite Loh briefly taking the first point in the second set, Lee swiftly regained control, dictating the pace and ultimately clinching the match in under an hour.
Other Notable Matches
Indonesia’s Anthony Ginting, seeded fifth, also advanced to the quarterfinals after a hard-fought 54-minute battle against Japan’s Nishimoto Kenta.
Ginting overcame an early deficit in the first set (21-18) before securing a narrow victory in the second (21-19). He now faces a formidable opponent world number one Viktor Axelsen, who defeated Weng Hongyang in straight sets (21-19, 21-14).
Lee Zii Jia Storms into All England Second Round, Sindhu Falls Short
Malaysian badminton star Lee Zii Jia has powered his way into the second round of the prestigious All England Open Championships. The 25-year-old put on a dominant performance yesterday, defeating world number six Kodai Naraoka of Japan in straight sets (21-12, 21-19).
This victory comes after a surprising turn of events for Lee. In preparation for the All England, Lee trained alongside India’s PV Sindhu in Birmingham.
Their coaches, being friends, facilitated this unique training partnership. Unfortunately, Sindhu’s journey at the All England was cut short after a second-round defeat to top seed An Seyoung of South Korea (21-19, 21-11).
Lee, however, seems to have channelled his training sessions into a winning strategy. This win mirrors his impressive performance at the last All England, where he reached the semifinals before bowing out to China’s Shi Yuqi (19-21, 13-21).
Mixed Doubles Pairs Bow Out Early
While Lee Zii Jia celebrates his win, Malaysia’s hopes in the mixed doubles category have come to an end. Both pairs were eliminated in the second round.
Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing fell short against Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet (17-21, 11-21).
Similarly, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei were edged out by the Dutch duo of Robin Tabeling and Selena Piek in a closely contested three-set match (21-17, 19-21, 16-21) that lasted nearly an hour.
