Lions Rally Past Texans in Thrilling Finish
Detroit rallied for a 26-23 win over the Houston Texans Sunday night on a 52-yard field goal by Jake Bates with time expiring, just two years after the Lions traded their first-round draft pick and two million dollars to the Los Angeles Rams to acquire Jared Goff as a fix for their anemic offense.
The Lions are now 8-1 for the first time since 1954 and remain unbeaten, with a seventh straight win overall and fifth on the road in a row.
Goff Throws Five Picks as Lions Lose to Texans
Goff threw three interceptions in the first two quarters and two more in the third to help turn a poor first half into a total rout for Detroit, trailing 23-7 at intermission. But the Lions then scored 16 unanswered points to tie it up with around five minutes to go on Bates’ 58-yard field goal.
Ka’imi Fairbairn spurned a chance to tie it with less than two minutes left, when his 58-yard field tries, wide left, gave the Texans (6-4) the ball back.
Their win was the first by a team since Nov. 18, 2012, when the Falcons beat the Cardinals 23-19 when Matt Ryan was picked five times.
But the Lions trailed 23-13 when David Montgomery ran for a 3-yard touchdown early in the third, then was stopped on the 2-point chance conversion try. Early in the fourth quarter, Detroit got within 23-20 on a 9-yard TD reception by Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 71 yards and Goff threw for 240 yards and touchdown.
The Texans were shut out after the break. C.J. Stroud threw two interceptions in the second half after throwing for 232 yards and a touchdown, and the Texans lost their third straight game in four.
That was the most picks by an NFL player since Jameis Winston threw five for Tampa Bay against Carolina on Oct. 13, 2019.
Goff hadn’t thrown an interception since Week 5 and had just four this entire season. That was his previous career high, four in a loss to Chicago while with the Rams on Dec. 9, 2018.
The Texans set a franchise record for picks as rookie Kamari Lassiter led with two interceptions.
On Detroit’s first drive, Jalen Pitre tipped a ball into the hands of Jimmie Ward on Detriot’s first drive as Houston recovered the ball on 33. But the Texans made it 7-0 when Joe Mixon ran 8 yards for a touchdown.
Stroud Shines, Texans’ Defense Delivers in Dominant Win
Fairbairn added a 34-yard field goal with just under two minutes left in the first quarter to push Houston’s lead to 10-0. Sam LaPorta also had a 20-yard touchdown reception to cut Detroit’s lead to 10-7.
The Texans had a 6 lead when Denico Autry hit Goff’s arm as he threw the ball, allowing Henry To’oto’o to catch it and the ball fell into the hands of Houston at Detroit 36.
The Texans couldn’t do much with the ball after that and settled for Fairbairn’s 29-yard field goal to cut it to 16-7 with less than four minutes left in the first half.
Stroud connected with John Metchia III for a 15-yard touchdown with sixteen seconds left in the second quarter to extend Houston’s lead to 23-7. Metchie’s touchdown was the first career, and missed his entire rookie season in 2022 while in treatment for leukemia.
Lassiter picked off Goff’s desperation throw on the last play of the first half with Goff’s third interception.
On the first play of the second half, Davis intercepted Stroud. Lassiter, however, grabbed his second interception of the game three plays later.
After Montgomery’s touchdown, Carlton Davis III leaped in front of Tank Dell in the end zone, with Detroit’s other pick coming off Tank Dell. The Texans couldn’t capitalize and had to punt two plays later when Goff threw his fifth pick.
Injuries
Texans: We missed DE Will Anderson Jr. with an ankle injury … After getting him activated from injured reserve Saturday, WR Nico Collins didn’t play … Lassiter was knocked out in the third quarter with a concussion.
Next Match
Lions: They will host Jacksonville next Sunday.
Texans: Go to Dallas on Monday, Nov. 18.
