The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, also fell cheaply to a delivery from Tim Southee that was almost impossible to get away with. Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal took them through to the end of the day.

India will resume batting from 16/1 on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test between India and New Zealand when play resumes in Pune on Friday to get control of the match. Yashasvi Jaiswal (6*) and Shubman Gill (10*) were unbeaten as the hosts trailed 243 runs after 11 overs of their first innings in the final session. Tim Southee got rid of India captain Rohit Sharma, departing for a nine-ball duck.

New Zealand’s first innings was lively, and there was plenty of see-saw battle. Early on, Tom Latham (15) and Will Young (18) fell to R Ashwin’s twice, while Kane Williamson joined Martin Guptill at the crease on 80. But Latham’s opening partner Devon Conway dug in and amassed a strong partnership with Rachin Ravindra.

But Conway eventually lost his wicket in the 44th over when he departed for 76 off 141 balls to Ashwin. Then it was Washington Sundar casting his magic spell, dismissing Ravindra (65) before taking the wicket of Daryl Mitchell (18). That’s all it took for Sundar, who went on to have Tom Blundell (3), Glenn Phillips (9), Mitchell Santner (33), Tim Southee (5) and Ajaz Patel (4) out as well.

Sundar Thrills as India Dominates New Zealand on Day 1

Speaking during Day 1’s last session, Sundar exulted in his outstanding spell. I was incredibly appreciative of the coach and captain for the way it went and the fact that I wasn’t in the first Test but was summoned for this one and given the chance to play in the XI. It was an unbelievable sensation.

I wanted to be precise regardless of the batter I was facing or the scenario I was bowling in. God’s plan just worked out wonderfully. I simply adjusted my pace sometimes and concentrated on hitting the specific spots, and I’m incredibly appreciative, Sundar remarked.

We genuinely felt it would start spinning from day one,” he continued, referring to the field and his favorite wicket. Though I don’t think it performed much in the second session, it did spin in the first.

After the third session, the pitch calmed down, but it did spin eventually. I can’t select just one—Rachin Ravindra, without a doubt, as he was batting brilliantly. The game was changed by Daryl Mitchell’s wicket as well.

Last words

Gill and Jaiswal are both ready to open for India to control India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 2. The Indian batting duo will resume on 16/1 and have the ability to add some runs on the scoreboard and put pressure on the Kiwi bowlers.

If Jaiswal and Gill convert his start into a big score, India could well be in a commanding position to post a competitive score themselves. The Indian batting lineup is deep and dependent, and if they achieve home advantage, they should be able to hence dominate New Zealand bowlers all day.

Kiwi bowlers will have to be at their best against the Indian openers and stop them from getting away to a fine start to lead their team in this brutal game. But India could put up a dominant show on Day two if they can maintain their positive run.

If Kiwi bowlers get the breakthrough, then the situation will be different on this spin-friendly pitch.
