Inter Miami vs Columbus: Inter Miami’s Historic Triumph
In the Inter Miami vs Columbus match, Lionel Messi scored twice as Miami beat Columbus Crew 3-2 to help the club win the MLS Supporters Shield for the first time.
The Argentina playmaker put them ahead with a close-range finish and doubled the away side’s lead in first-half stoppage time with a sublime free kick. Diego Rossi snatched a goal back for Crew in Ohio before Luis Suarez applied the gloss to Inter Miami’s two-goal lead and they just about saw off Cucho Hernandez’s penalty.
As a result, Miami will end the season at the top of the table and also win the Supporters’ Shield, or the division awarded to the MLS club with the best regular season record, for the first time since joining in 2020.
It is Messi’s 46th piece of silverware, 34 for club and country. It means Miami has done enough to win the first seeding in the post-season play-offs and host any future games in the tournament.
Miami Chases MLS History
“The initial target has been achieved and now we have to think about what’s next,” Messi stated.
Three games make up the first round; after that, it’s only one game, so anything may happen. However, we have the fantastic benefit of being able to play every game at home—exactly what we were searching for. At home, we are solid.”
Miami can match the MLS record for most points in a regular season, currently, 73 set by the New England Revolution in 2021, with two wins from their last two league games.
