Injury Concerns of Chris Godwin Raises for Buccaneers
Near the end of Thursday’s game, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin was carted off the field against the Baltimore Ravens.
Head coach Todd Bowles said later the first signs were that Godwin dislocated his ankle following the game. But Bowles stated, “It doesn’t look good.“
Before the injury, Godwin had seven catches for 65 yards. He picked up the load, as Mike Evans suffered a hamstring injury earlier in the game.
But the veteran came into the week with 43 catches for 511 yards and five touchdowns.
The Bucs’ Godwin stepped in for Jones in all 17 games of the 2023 season, catching 83 balls for 1,024 yards to rank second behind him and also leading the team.
On offense, he caught two touchdown passes and had a rushing score. That made it his third straight 1,000-yard season and the fourth of his career.
Impact on Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Late in the 2021 season, the 28-year-old suffered a torn ACL and MCL but still got to suit up for Week 1 of 2022. One of Tampa Bay’s most important offensive players, he picked right back up and played in 15 games with 104 catches for 1,023 yards and three TDs.
Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady, who retired after the 2022 season, was a big Godwin fan. Penn State product developed a similar rapport with Baker Mayfield, who earned the starting job last offseason and signed a three-year extension in March.
If Godwin does miss time, star wide receiver Mike Evans will step up even more as a passing option, maybe even more than usual. That said, Sterling Shepard would likely see more volume his way as well, and Trey Palmer and Jalen McMillan would see more time on the way.
