Warriors Survive Late Pelicans Push
On Friday night, the Golden State Warriors defeated the flailing New Orleans Pelicans 112-108, led by Andrew Wiggins scored 30 points, and guaranteed a position in the NBA Cup elimination round.
Stephen Curry scored 19 points as the Warriors improved to 3-0 in West Group C.
With 18.5 seconds remaining, Buddy Hield made two free throws to conclude his 12-point effort, helping to keep New Orleans at bay and guarantee Golden State would leave the group as at least a wild card, if not the group winner.
With five seconds left, Trey Murphy III, who had 24 points, missed a 3-pointer that would have given New Orleans the lead after Brandon Boston Jr. had stolen an inbound pass from Golden State.
Green snatched the rebound, calmly sank the free throws, and clinched victory for the Warriors.
Boston scored 16 points, Brandon Ingram added 18, and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl scored 19 for the Pelicans, who lost for the tenth time in 11 games and dropped to 1-2 in group play.
Jordan Hawkins scored six points after missing seven games due to back pain.
Takeaways
Warriors: For Golden State, depth and balance were crucial. Each of Green and Brandin Podziemski scored eleven points.
Pelicans: Elfrid Payton, Daniel Theis, Javonte Green, Ingram, and Murphy were the 12th different starting lineups of the season as the injury-plagued Pelicans began the game without rookie center and first-round draft pick Yves Missi due to a strained left shoulder.
Moments
With 5:13 remaining, Wiggins was fouled by Robinson-Earl and spun in a 13-foot floater. The Pelicans didn’t get any closer than 110-108 after he made the three-pointer to put the score at 102-94.
