What is the Buzkashi game?

The Buzkashi game is a traditional and exciting game played in Central Asia. In Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, it played. It involves horse riding, a ball, and a lot of adrenaline!

Two teams of horsemen must take a goat or calf from the circle in the middle of the field and carry it to their respective goals. To earn points, someone should drop a calf, or the carcass of a calf, into a hole. It is usually the team with the most goals that wins.

History

Several ethnic groups adopted the game of Buzkashi, including Kazakhs, Turkmens, Tajiks, Pashtuns, Kyrgyz, and others, and spread throughout Central Asia. 

In Afghanistan, it is their national sport. Each ethnic group has its method of playing Buzkashi, and several aspects of the game vary based on where you are.

The Afghan government now requires using calves instead of goats to prevent animal cruelty. Buzkashi Game has two dominant styles: Tudabarai and Qarajai. In Tudabarai, players must hold the goat and move in any direction until their opponents clear the way. In Qarajai, players carry the goat to the opposing team’s end and place it in a circle to score.

People can play games on horses, but they can also play games on yaks. In some locations, they played Buzkashi sports in a wide-open area. Two teams fight against one another in some nations, while people engage alone in others.

The objective of the Buzkashi game

  • The game aims to grab the carcass and carry it toward the opposing team’s holes or around a flag while on horseback to prevent the other team from doing the same. 
  • Most of the time, the team that successfully carries the carcass to the opposing team’s holes or around a flag wins the game.
  • Players play Buzkashi sports to demonstrate their skill and bravery as they contend with each other while riding at high speeds on horseback.

Types of equipment

Horse:

In the Buzkashi game, players use their horses, which are the most significant piece of equipment. Horses need to be strong and agile, able to maneuver quickly, and withstand the physical contact of the game.

Whip:

A whip called a “Chapandaz” is used by players to control their horses and to fend off opponents. A whip is a leather tool up to six feet in length.

Carcass:

As I mentioned earlier, the carcass used in Buzkashi sports is typically that of a goat or calf. The carcass is decapitated and drained of its blood before the game.

Saddle: 

The saddle used in Buzkashi games is typically a heavy-duty leather saddle with a high cantle and pommel to provide the rider with a secure seat.

Chogan:

 The players use a long, sturdy stick to control the ball (the carcass) and defend themselves against other players.

Takht: 

A wooden or metal frame serves as the goal area for the game.

Tug:

They attached a strap to the carcass to make it easier for the players to carry.

Kandag:

A whip is used to make horses go faster and hit other horseplayers.

Chapan: 

To defend themselves from the weather and injury during the game, the participants don traditional coats made of heavy wool.

Tuz: 

The players apply resin or glue to the carcass to help it hold together during the game.

Goal posts:

Each end of the field has a goal area marked by tall poles with flags. The game aims to bring the carcass to your team’s goal area.

Rules

The objective of the game is for players who are riding horses to try to score by placing a carcass of a goat or calf in a designated area, which is the goal.

Teams: 

They play Buzkashi sports with two teams of usually five to ten players each. The “Chapandaz” is the captain who leads the team. They limited each squad to five riders per half.

The Carcass: 

The players decapitated the carcass and drained it of its blood before the game. They place the carcass in the center of the field at the start of the game.

Duration: 

They usually played the game for two 45-minute periods with a 15-minute break, but the duration may vary based on team agreement.

Scoring: 

The game aims to score points by carrying the carcass to the designated goal area. If a team takes the carcass to the goal area, they get one point.

Fouls: 

Certain violations can happen during the game, for example, striking another player with the whip or deliberately injuring another player or horse. These fouls can cause penalties, such as being temporarily removed from the game or having points deducted from your team’s score.

Safety: 

It is imperative to take safety precautions when riding horses and interacting physically. Players are required to wear protective gear, including helmets, and rules are in place to prevent dangerous behavior.

How to play the Buzkashi game?

Buzkashi game is an exhilarating and adrenaline-fueled game that originated in Central Asia. Here’s how to play it:

  1. Buzkashi sports has two types: Tudabarai, where the aim is to grab the goat, and Qarajai, where riders must carry the carcass around a marker before throwing it into a scoring circle.
  2. Create two groups of horse riders and have each group attempt to seize a headless goat’s body from a central circle in the field.
  3. Riders race toward the carcass at full speed from the center of the field to start the game.
  4. The aim is to pick up the carcass and carry it to the scoring area on the other side of the field while fending off other riders who are trying to steal it.
  5. The team with the highest points for placing the carcass in the scoring area wins within 90 minutes.
