Joe Flacco with the Browns: Embracing the Present, Eyeing the Playoffs
At present, Joe Flacco with the Browns has no hard feelings against the New York Jets, who chose not to re-sign him after last season and also declined to bring him back after Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the opener this season.
This Thursday, Flacco and the Browns have the opportunity to clinch the team’s first postseason appearance since 2020 when they host the Jets.
“I enjoyed my time with the Jets, but I’m happy to be where I am,” Flacco said. He spent parts of three seasons with the team.”
Flacco has been the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in the last four games, out of which they won three. Currently, the Browns (10-5) are in the 5th position in the playoff standings, and the ESPN Football Power Index predicts their chances of qualifying for the postseason as better than 99%.
During the last four weeks, Flacco has thrown for 1,307 yards, which is the highest among all NFL quarterbacks. He has also thrown ten touchdown passes, which is tied with Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams and Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers for the highest number of touchdown passes thrown during that time.
From Backup to Browns Starter: Joe Flacco’s Unlikely Journey Takes Center Stage
Joe Flacco was without a team this season until Deshaun Watson, quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, sustained a season-ending shoulder injury. Following this, Flacco auditioned for the Browns on November 17th, and three days later, he signed with their practice squad.
During the previous season, Flacco played four games with the Jets, including a remarkable 31-30 win in Week 2 against Cleveland. In that game, Flacco threw four touchdown passes, two of which were in the final two minutes, leading to an astonishing comeback. He described it as the “craziest finish” of his career.
After the Jets selected Zach Wilson, the 2021 No. 2 draft pick, as their starting quarterback, Darnold wouldn’t throw another touchdown pass until joining the Browns this season.
“There are 32 teams in the NFL and they are all just another team,” said Flacco. “However, I have a lot of respect for the guys over there and I had an awesome few years with them in the locker room.“
The Cleveland Browns have recently put their rookie quarterback, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, on injured reserve due to a hip injury. As a result, PJ Walker, who has already started two games this season, will now take over as the Browns’ backup quarterback for the rest of the season.
