Carr’s Oblique Injury: A Setback for the Saints
Derek Carr left New Orleans Saints’ 26-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs early Monday night with an oblique injury in the fourth quarter.
As the Saints pushed for a conversion on a deep fourth down late in the game at Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs sent all out on Carr, happy to force an incompletion.
But a few plays later, after taking a strong hit in the backfield, Carr was slow to get up and was seen walking to the locker room slowly without his helmet. While the Saints initially stated that Derek Carr was questionable to return with an oblique injury, the extent of his injury remains unclear. Carr didn’t come back into the game.
Finally, throwing on 18 of 28 for 165 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, he finished. Carr would later be seen leaving on his own and will not undergo surgery after an MRI Tuesday revealed he had a “left side injury,” Saints coach Dennis Allen said.
Carr stated that he hurt himself not during the hit but as he turned to throw the ball on the same play. “I couldn’t do what I needed to, in the simplest form,” Carr said.
Saints Struggle Without Carr, Haener Takes the Reins
Without Carr, the Saints leaned on Jake Haener to get them to the other end. New Orleans took Haener in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Fresno State, but Haener has already played three games this season — though before Monday night, he attempted just a single pass.
Haener threw 2 of 7 for 17 yards as it concluded. On Monday night, the Chiefs led from start to finish grabbing a 13-point win and moving to a perfect 5-0. The Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes threw for 331 yards and had an interception, his ninth consecutive regular season game with a pick. Kareem Hunt had 27 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown.
Among those 12 carries were 26 yards for Alvin Kamara, who led the Saints. Shaheed had 86 yards and a touchdown on four catches for Rashid. Carr’s other touchdown pass in the fourth quarter was to Foster Moreau, who caught the ball in to cut the game to three points.
However, the Chiefs responded with 10 unanswered points to get the win, and the Packers will now need to decide what changes to make in a season that featured the most since 2006.
After two blowout wins to kick off the year, New Orleans has lost three in a row. Next on Sunday, the Saints will take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Carr’s status for that matchup is up in the air.
