India’s medal hopes at the BWF World Championships

Prannoy H.S. and Lakshya Sen will spearhead India’s medal push at the BWF World Championships, which begin on Monday. Everyone will be keeping an eye on Satwiksaraj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, India’s best doubles combo at world No. 2.

They hope to improve on their bronze medal from the previous season. Since the tournament’s inception in 1977, India has won 13 medals, including one gold, four silver, and eight bronze. From 1983 through 2005, the tournament was a biannual event, and it has since become an annual event, save during the Olympic years.

Kidambi Srikanth, Lakshya Sen Eye More Medals for India

Prakash Padukone, the great Indian player, became the first Indian to win a bronze medal at the World Championships in 1983. Since 2011, India has won at least one medal every year, headed by PV Sindhu. Sindhu currently has a bye and will face the winner of the match between Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara and Vietnam’s Thuy Linh Nguyen.

Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen added silver and bronze medals to India’s medal tally in the 2021 edition. Satwik and Chirag also won a bronze medal in 2022. Prannoy has been a regular performer in the previous 12 months, reaching the quarter-final stage in both 2021 and 2022, and is regarded as a favorite for the podium this time around.

Prannoy H.S. was in good form ahead of Singapore Open

Prannoy won the Malaysia Masters and advanced to the finals of the Australian Open, putting him in a good position. He will begin his campaign against Kalle Koljonen of Finland, who is ranked 56th in the world.

Sen also hopes to make it to the weekend, where he will face Mauritius’ Georges Julien Paul, who is rated 110th in the world. If he is successful, he will most likely face Jeon Hyeok Jin of Korea.

Srikanth’s play has been erratic this season, with his game slipping at vital times. He intends to change this tendency as soon as possible during the pre-Olympic season, as Paris qualifying is at risk.
