Emma McKeon Announces Retirement

The retirement of Emma McKeon from competitive swimming made a sensation in the swimming world. The most successful Australian Olympian swimmer announced it shockingly.

McKeon, who won 14 medals in three Olympics, including a record six golds, said on Instagram that it was time to retire from swimming.

The 30-year-old had previously stated that Paris would be her last Olympics.

“Leading into Paris, I knew it would be my last Olympics, and the months since have given me time to reflect on my journey and think about what I wanted my future to look like in swimming,” McKeon stated.

“I am pleased with myself since I have given my swimming career my all, both emotionally and physically.

“I wanted to prove my abilities, and I succeeded.

“I’ve benefited greatly from swimming. From the moment my dream began when I was five years old until my third Olympic Games. I am incredibly grateful for all the lessons, experiences, friendships, and memories I have gained. In addition to everyone who helped me, collaborated with me, and encouraged me. Thank you.

“Now I am excited to see how I can push myself in other ways and for all the things life has in store.”

McKeon Sets New Standard for Australian Olympic Success

With nine medals apiece, McKeon leads Ian Thorpe and Kaylee McKeown for the most medals an Australian has won at the Olympics.

She also holds the top spot in Australian Olympic history with her six golds, surpassing Mollie O’Callaghan, Thorpe, and McKeown.

Emma McKeon is Australia’s most successful swimmer thanks to her outstanding Olympic program, but what pivotal event allowed her to create history?

Following her revelation, McKeon’s article began to get a deluge of comments.

I am very proud of you, Em. You will always be a legend both in and out of the pool,” Ariarne Titmus wrote.

“Emma, I love your work. Tennis great Ash Barty wrote, “Enjoy the next chapter.”

“Wow. What a career! I’m honoured to have been on some of your teams. Jess Fox, the gold medallist from Paris, commented, “Congratulations Emma, enjoy whatever comes next.”

In August, McKeon revealed to ABC Illawarra that she had a complex connection with the sport that made her famous across the world.

“It is a love-hate relationship with a lot of it, but once it is not there you realise how good it is and you miss it,” she added.

“Even when I’m on break, I always feel like I am missing pushing myself and working towards a goal.”
