What is a Dodgeball game?

A Dodgeball game is a team sport that moves quickly. In this game, two teams compete by throwing balls and avoiding getting hit. Players try to hit their opponents with the thrown balls while dodging incoming throws. If a player gets struck, they are out, but if a teammate catches a ball, they can bring back a teammate.

Eliminate Opposite Players:

The main goal of dodgeball players is to eliminate opponents by throwing balls and striking them. If a ball hits a player and the opposing player catches it before it touches the ground, the hit player is out.

Protecting Your Teammates

Besides eliminating opponents, another goal is to protect your teammates from getting hit. You can block or dodge incoming balls to prevent your teammates from getting eliminated.

Maintaining Team Presence

To maintain a presence on the court, you must have at least one active player from your team. The other side wins the round if they eliminate every member of your squad.

Catching Balls

Catching a thrown ball from the opposing team allows you to bring back a previously eliminated teammate. If a player catches a ball before it hits the ground, the player who threw the ball is out, and the catching player’s teammate can re-enter the game.

Zulu warriors performed a game called “dodging” on the African continent, which is one of the earliest known variants of the game. The goal was to avoid being struck by hurled sticks or balls.

European Influence:

During the Middle Ages, the modern notion of dodgeball games took shape in Europe. It entailed throwing the ball toward the opponent. The game quickly became popular among kids and extended to other European countries.

The United States:

It arrived in the United States with European immigrants in the 17th and 18th centuries. It immediately became a popular activity in American schools and playgrounds. However, the rules and variants of the game differed considerably in different locations.

National Dodgeball Association (NDA):

American dodgeball started in 1884 with the National Dodgeball Association (NDA). The goal was to codify the regulations and promote it as a competitive sport. It was the first systematic effort to control the game and lay the groundwork for its future evolution.

Modernization and Popularity:

It saw tremendous modernization and increased appeal throughout the mid-twentieth century. Rubber balls replaced softer balls in earlier editions as the favored choice.

Dodgeball game has become popular in schools and leisure centers across the United States as a fun and competitive pastime for children and adults.

Film and Media Influence:

The 2004 comedy film “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” popularized the game. The film’s amusing depiction of a dodgeball competition spurred an increased interest in the sport. Dodgeball leagues and tournaments sprang up worldwide, attracting players of all ages.

International Dodgeball Federation (IDF):

The International Dodgeball Federation (IDF) established itself in 2005. Its goals were to bring together dodgeball communities worldwide and establish consistent regulations for international events. The IDF aggressively advertises the sport, plans competitions, and tries to get acceptance from world governing organizations of sport.

Evolution of Rules:

Over time, the regulations of dodgeball games have changed to promote fairness, safety, and inclusivity. It has transformed into different versions of regular dodgeball and foam dodgeball. These modifications have helped the game maintain its popularity and growth.

Present-Day Dodgeball:

It is now played in schools, community centers, and leagues globally. Since it is considered a legitimate sport, it is included in multi-sport events and competitions. The game offers participants an intense and pleasurable experience while encouraging collaboration, agility, and strategic thinking.

Continued Growth:

Governing Body:

There are two governing bodies: The World Dodgeball Federation (WDBF), with 87 members, and the World Dodgeball Association (WDA), with 62.

Since 2012, WBDF has organized the Dodgeball World Championship. The Association for International Sport for All (TAFISA), established in 2011, has the WDBF as a contributing member.

The first Dodgeball World Championship took place in Kuala Lumpur in 2012.

By 2021, the WDBF had grown to 80 members affiliated with continental federations. Starting in 2022, the Dodgeball World Championship introduced a new category featuring cloth balls alongside traditional foam balls.

Boundary Lines:

A centerline divides the court into two halves. Boundary lines mark the sides and rear of each team’s half, helping determine if players are in or out of bounds.

Materials:

Surface Texture:

The dodgeball court’s surface must provide enough grip to prevent players from slipping or sliding. It should be smooth and free of tripping hazards.

Visibility:

How to play Dodgeball game

Organize the players into teams

Collect all the players and split them into two equal teams. You can have as few as four players or as many as you like, but try to balance teams for a fair game.

Prepare the game environment

Make a large enough playing area for participants to roam about freely. You can use a gymnasium, an outdoor field, or any open place with well-defined boundaries. To properly define the playing area, use cones or tape to mark the borders.

Arrange the dodgeballs in the middle

Place an equal number of dodgeballs in the center of the playing area. Teams will determine the number of dodgeballs and the desired intensity level. The number of dodgeballs will be based on team size and intensity preferences. You may usually begin with six to ten dodgeballs.

Begin the game

Make the players stand behind their respective team’s boundary lines. When you’re ready, start the game. Players are free to walk about within their team’s zone, but must not venture outside of it.

Collect the dodgeballs

Players rush to the center at the start of the game to grab the dodgeballs. They can collect as many dodgeballs as they like, but they must return to their side of the playing area to throw them.

Start throwing the dodgeballs

Players throw dodgeballs at the opposing team members to eliminate them from the game. To remove an opponent, a player must knock them below the shoulders with a thrown ball. When a player catches a thrown ball, it eliminated the thrower instead of the catcher.

Prevent being struck

Players move quickly and with agility to avoid being struck by dodgeballs thrown at them. They can use their teammates as shields, ducks, or dodge. If a dodgeball hits any player during the game, the player is disqualified and must leave the field.

Bring back the eliminated players

The eliminated player leaves the field of play and waits on the sidelines. One of their teammates must successfully catch an opponent’s tossed ball to re-enter the game.

Finish the game

Play until one side has eliminated all the other team members. The game will continue until one team eliminates all members of the other team. Both teams must actively take part in the game to win.

Play numerous rounds

If desired, you can play additional rounds to allow teams to trade sides or change teams. It offers variation and keeps the game interesting for everyone involved.

Tournament: Dodgeball World Championships

The World Dodgeball Federation (WDBF) hosts the Dodgeball World Championship.

It has held the competition yearly since 2012. While foam was the sole format used in previous editions, starting in 2022, it would play the Dodgeball World Championship in two categories: foam and cloth.

In the 2012 foam category, Hong Kong won the Men’s title, and Canada won the Women’s title. COVID-19 delayed it until 2020-2021. 

The United States took the lead in the women’s foam category. Malaysia and Canada fought fiercely, but could not surpass the United States.

During the Mixed foam category competition in 2022, Canada won for the first time, and Austria won for the first time in Mixed cloth. Great Britain won the men’s cloth category. Austria won the women’s cloth category.
