Bopanna eyes second Grand Slam men’s doubles title
On Thursday, Rohan Bopanna of India became the oldest player in Open history to reach the final of a Grand Slam in men’s doubles at the 2023 US Open.
In the semi-final at Louis Armstrong Stadium, Bopanna and his Australian partner, Matthew Ebden, upset Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. It is Bopanna’s second participation in a Grand Slam men’s doubles final. He had reached the US Open final alongside Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi in 2010.
In the hotly fought first set, Bopanna and Ebden briefly fell 4-2. After maintaining their serve, the duo broke the French pair to tie the match. The heat affected several players during this year’s Slam. Mahut also had trouble with the heat in the later parts of the opening set.
Bopanna and Ebden Cruise to the Final
Bopanna and Ebden won the tiebreaker 7-3, giving them complete control of the second set. They didn’t waste any of it, ensuring that their opponents only took two games from them. They breezed through to the final.
The two-time defending champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury or the second-seeded team of Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek will now be their opponents. The semi-final match is set to begin immediately following Bopanna and Ebden’s encounter at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Bopanna’s Mixed Doubles Successes and Failures
Bopanna won his sole Grand Slam championship in the mixed doubles category at the 2017 French Open, teaming up with Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada.
He also reached the Australian Open mixed doubles finals this year, but ended runner-up to fellow Indian Sania Mirza, who quit from the sport the following year. In addition, alongside Timea Babos, he reached the Australian Open mixed doubles final in 2023.
Bopanna and Aldila Sutjiadi competed in mixed doubles at the 2023 US Open. They got eliminated in the second round.
Bopanna reached his last Grand Slam final with Qureshi at the 2010 US Open. They were known as the “Indo-Pak Express” and also reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2010. In the US Open final, Bob and Mike Bryan defeated Bopanna and Qureshi 7–6 (7–5), 7–6 (7–4).
