Chelsea Sign Moises Caicedo for Club-Record £115 Million
On Monday, the club confirmed that Moisés Caicedo had joined Chelsea from Brighton for a club-record cost of £115 million ($146 million). Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has identified Caicedo as his top summer target, and Brighton has rejected the club’s early approaches. The transfer saga, which had lasted months, was finally over.
Chelsea, on the other hand, had to compete for his signing. Liverpool broke the record on Friday by agreeing to pay £111 million to Brighton, becoming the first team to do so, but the midfielder rejected a transfer to Anfield and declared his desire to join Chelsea.
Caicedo: “I’m So Happy to Join Chelsea!”
Chelsea boosted their bid, and according to ESPN, the team concluded a deal on Sunday. The agreement contains a guaranteed initial payment of £100 million, as well as an extra £15 million in add-ons. About half of the add-ons are described as simple to activate, while the other half is much more difficult.
“I am so happy to join Chelsea! I am so excited to be here at this big club and I didn’t have to think twice when Chelsea called me, I just knew I wanted to sign for the club,” Caicedo made the announcement following the signing of an eight-year deal at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s a dream come true to be here and I can’t wait to get started with the team.”
Chelsea continue to invest in young talent
From the Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle, Caicedo moved to Brighton in February 2021 and had a productive time there. The first part of the subsequent season saw him on loan at Beerschot in Belgium. For Brighton, he appeared in 53 games across all leagues.
He has since joined the ranks of club employees who have relocated to Chelsea, including previous managers Graham Potter, Robert Sánchez, and Marc Cucurella.
Since the new ownership, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, finalized their acquisition of the club in May 2022, Chelsea has spent over $1 billion in player transfer fees, as seen by the signing of Caicedo.
