Harriet Dart Fights Back to Stay in US Open Qualifying Hunt

Harriet Dart of Great Britain is still in the running for a spot in the US Open main draw following a valiant comeback victory in the first round of qualification.

Against France’s Chloe Paquet, Dart, 27, fell behind by a set and an early break, but she rallied back to win 3-6 6-4 6-1.

The last Grand Slam tournament of the year, which begins in New York on Monday, requires the British number four to win two more wins this week to qualify.

However, Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine defeated Heather Watson 6-3, 6-2, eliminating Watson from the tournament.

In a tough match, British No. 3 Watson, aged 31, faced the 12th seed Yastremska. For the second consecutive year, Watson won’t compete in Flushing Meadows’ main draw.

Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, ranked 86th, is seeded third. She will face Dart in the second round. Dart holds a current ranking of 140th.

Three British players, Lily Miyazaki, Liam Broady, and Jan Choinski, will start their qualifying matches on Wednesday

Wednesday marks the start of the qualifying matches for three further Britons: Lily Miyazaki, Liam Broady, and Jan Choinski.

However, due to a back problem, Katie Swan withdrew from the competition last week. On Friday, they will hold the third and final qualifying round. Sixteen men and sixteen women will advance to the main draw.

Six British athletes, including Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans, Jack Draper, Katie Boulter, and Jodie Burrage, qualified for the tournament directly due to their placements inside the top 100 in the world.

Burrage lost in the opening round of the lower-level Chicago Women’s Open competition on Tuesday, but she still qualified for her first major without a wildcard. Quinn Gleason of America defeated the 96th-ranked British number two, 5-7 6-3 7-6 (7-4).
